When light travels between media (such as glass and air), a portion of the light is reflected - a phenomenon known as Fresnel Reflection. Typical uncoated glass optical components will suffer approximately 8 - 10% loss from Fresnel Relections (depending on the wavelength of light and the index of refraction of the material). Adding an anti-reflection coating to the optical component can significantly reduce that transmission loss.
