Uses: Tetracaine is used to improve drug penetration into the skin.

Tetracaine is a local anesthetic used to numb the throat, eyes, or nose. The drug is usually given before surgery to reduce pain. Tetracaine is applied to the eyes 30 minutes before an IV starts. It lasts up to 15 minutes.

Tetracaine blocks nerve systems. It blocks sodium ion channels needed for neural impulses, affecting local anaesthetics. Tetracaine affects calcium release channels in cells.

Do not use if pregnant.

If you're breastfeeding, tell your doctor because there's no research on whether tetracaine can pass into breast milk or harm a nursing baby.

To make tetracaine safe, tell your doctor if you have a history of spinal or brain injury, heart disease, eye problems, a blood vessel disorder, open sores, or a skin injury in the area where the medicine will be applied.
