Polyester is a polymer category primarily composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Polyester is a synthetic polymer made from PTA and MEG. Polyester yarn is the flagship product of the polyester category. Almost 40% of the world's polyester production is used directly for the production of polyester yarns. Polyester yarn is PTA & MEG direct spinning. It is also made by spinning PET chips, which are a by-product of PTA and MEG. Its PTA products for the world's largest consumers include British Petroleum, Reliance, Sinopec, Sk-Chemicals, Mitsui, and Eastman Chemicals. MEG's production is in the hands of about a dozen global players like MEGlobal, JV of DOW, and PIC Kuwait, followed by Sabic.
The main use of polyester is in the textile sector for the production of polyester yarns. Various forms of polyester are widely used in textile applications to produce polyester (PET) resins and filament yarns such as polyester spun yarns (PSY), technical yarns, tire cords, and monofilament yarns. Polyester yarn is also used to manufacture packaging applications such as polyester film, electrical tape, strapping, and several other everyday items. Polyester filament yarns are used in knitting and weaving to produce polyester fabrics such as consumer fabrics and home textiles such as curtains, bed sheets, bedspreads and curtains. Similarly, high-strength polyester industrial yarns can be used in the manufacture of ropes, conveyor belts, seat belts, and tire fabrics. Polyester staple fiber is mainly used as fiberfill for pillows, cushions, sofas and bedding stuffing.
