1.Introduction:
Barite, a dense sulfate mineral, is also called Barites, Baryte or heavy spar. It is a sulfate of barium, BaSO 4, found in nature as tabular crystals or in granular or massive form and has a high specific gravity. The mineral is widely distributed throughout the world. It generally occurs in the white massive variety (often appearing earthy when weathered) and is extremely insoluble in acid and water and is therefore chemically inert. It is the principal source of the element barium.
2.Application:
1). As raw material for paints, printing ink, plastics, rubber and storage battery.
2). As surface smear for photographic paper and calendered paper; as sizing agent for textile industry.
3). As clarifying agent for glass products.
4). As protective material for radiation; also used for ceramics, enamel, perfumes and pigments.
5). As raw material for the making of other barium salts.
